What do stay-at-home moms do?

Chuck and I just spent two days in a row staying home with Aurora. He’s been able to stay with her until lunchtime so that I can get my work done in the AM, then I come home and take care of her for the rest of the day. Truthfully, she doesn’t seem sick (loose stool one day, low grade fever the next, neither a big deal), so you’d think we could treat it like a weekend and have a good time. The problem is its 105 degrees outside, so we really can’t go ANYWHERE. Yesterday I took her to the library and the car was so hot afterwards that I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get her in the car seat to drive home – and by the time we got home, she was bright red. It was actually kind of scary! So today we stayed home. What to do, what to do… well, here’s what we did:

Splashed in the baby pool, tried on shoes, sat in chairs, scattered blocks around, scribbled, bounced on balls, unraveled dental floss, watched PBS, put things in bags and took them back out again, played with the water dispenser, and oh so much more. We have an exciting life, right!?

I also watched Oprah, which was all about overwhelmed moms and the horrible life threatening mistakes they can make – accidentally leaving the toddler in the car on a hot day being one of them. OH MY GOSH – as if I wasn’t already freaked out about driving anywhere with Aurora during this severe heat – that show was so very sad. There were all kinds of moms talking about mistakes they’d made while overwhelmed, sleep deprived, and distracted. I have to tell you, it made me stop and think and appreciate the long hours spent with Aurora today and yesterday. Staying at home may not be my thing, but I love that little daughter and know that we will do whatever we need to keep her safe and healthy.

Here’s hoping she’s well enough for daycare tomorrow. If not, I’m getting a babysitter this weekend!

Cute pictures of little Aurora. How did you get the pictures uploaded like that? I like it.

Hi Mel! I uploaded them all small without being centered or anything, but then still had to shrink them down more manually and just moved them around myself and make them look uniform. It took a few minutes - but I had a vision!!!

beautiful array of photos. I remember when Emily was 4 months old (June 1982) Sally brought her to New Orleans for a little touring. Being tromped around downtown in that heat, she turned bright red, with a worried look on her face, and big drops of sweat falling off her face. Poor Kid!! Now she seems to like it up north. Love, susanna

It's good to have a day or two at home once in a while. Aurora looks like she's having fun but I bet you're ready to go back to work. And here comes the week end.

Do you have air conditioning in your car?
Cheezland has been having some heat, too, but not nearly as bad as TX.

Summerfest has already begun by the lakefront in Milwaukee. We missed some really great fireworks last night (saw on TV) because we were afraid it would be too hot for us.

Speaking of fireworks, where will Aurora be watching fireworks on July 4th?

AC in the car is irrelevant once it's been sitting in the sun for an hour or longer... it's like 115 degrees in there and the car seat is so hot Aurora screams when she touches it!!! Then you're sitting in the heat with air blowing at you, waiting for the cool of the AC to spread across the car and reach the back seat where the baby is, but by then you're roasting. This is not the usual - we're breaking heat records everyday!

No plans yet for the 4th... I'm sure we'll think of something fun to do!

Sounds like Aurora would probably like some of the cool new car features, like windows that can be opened as the driver approaches the car, and cooling/heated seats which are great for hot & cold weather.

In the meantime, have you considered something like an Egyptian cotton material, like a sheet with a high 300 plus threadcount, that can quickly cool as the air cools, and Aurora wouldn't have to have any direct skin on a hot plastic surface? Just a friendly idea for our roasting Aurora, and might make her parents more comfortable, too.

Have you tried watching the View with Aurora in the morning? Lots of fun & informative discussions with Whoopi, Barbara Walters, etc.

Oh, Robin... car seats are covered in fabric, but despite that, and even if we opened the windows before getting to the car, it's just too hot. I mean, we have heat advisories going... old people, dogs, and babies can die in this heat!!! And no, we don't watch the View ;) Mostly Sesame Street!
